Porthcawl, South Wales. A town that tries to be a seaside atraction but is actualy a disused coal port for the welsh valleys. Does have the worlds biggest mobile caravan park though, it's only claim to fame.

I went to Barrow-In-Furness once.......and prompty re-named it Barren In Furness. Part of Hull can be a right toilet, as can bits of Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. Went to Belfast a few years ago and bought petrol from a (unique to me) reinforced/barricaded petrol station!!!

Sheffield has to be the worst I've visited in this country, but that was back in the 80's, the 1980's, so it might have improved.

However the worst place I've ever visited was a small nondescript town off US Route One in South Carolina. Ghastly experience.

Nobody has mentioned Corby yet.

I had the misfortune to work there for a month about 15 years ago - concrete flats laid out in an incomprensible maze, poo on the stairs, boarded up windows, full of depressed Scots who moved down there for jobs at the steelworks, which then shut.

Concrete estate pubs with no windows...concrete shops in town. The biggest, newest building in the town centre was the Job Centre and the most popular venue was the Sun Page 3 Fun Pub.

I live in hope that it might have improved, but am not volunteering to go back and investigate.

Nothing personal Big C, but I've got my issues with Gosport as well.

We do have some dreadful places in Britain. Typified by a run down town, lacking jobs and therefore money with feral young men hanging around on streets in small groups. The pubs, shops and the obligatory working (sic) mens club are usually identifiable by the grilles and the graffiti.

I do not know there names and I cycle through them without stopping. But leave Glasgow on a bike headed toward Edinburgh and you come across a string of towns blighted by poor planning and poorer people. The central belt is not pretty and will not feature in many of Scotland's PR or tourist web sites.

Why not just make a list of nice towns in Britain? Wouldn't take as long, couple of posts should cover it.

In the interests of Pompey-Southampton balance, you can stick both of them up your nipsy as far as I'm concerned.

Looked up Annan on the interbob and found this....
