It helps stops puncure getting in the way of your ride, to have or not is up to you. I run some kind of slime on 6 out of 7 of my bikes.

Some love it, some hate it. I can't say I'm its number one fan as it adds rotating mass and makes the ride feel a touch leaden, but in over 15 years of commuting it proved to be the anti-puncture method most likely to allow me to complete a journey withput breaking out the tools once the worst happened. This attribute was much appreciated when cycling down country roads at half last two am. It depends what your priorities are as to whether its the best for you.

Try it and see. Some like it, some don't mind it, some hate it. I found it did its intended job but did make a small adverse change in feel, so I only ran them on my commuter. However, if you're running them on an MTB the extra mass and changes in feel are liable to be very minimal.

Other folk prefer armoured tyres, others would rather not tinker with that sort of thing.

I bought the slime tubes last year . I've only suffered one puncture with them ,and that was pinch flat in which no slime tubes would stop. The only negative I can comment on, is that the presta valve sometimes gets bunged up with the slime but it's never been to big a problem clearing it out with a good track pump.

I don't use it. I am ok with the number of punctures I get. I believe it can block up the valve and make a terrible mess if something cuts the tube ... but then I've had quite a few punctures in the last 45,000km or so, but only once had a tyre sliced badly enough to rip open a tube, so I may be a fool for not using this stuff.

Experience tells me that avoidance of punctures is strongly correlated with avoidance of gritty areas of road margins and care when passing recently flailed hawthorn hedges. I use lightweight Veloflex tyres on my winter bike for their smooth ride and excellent wet grip and I get 3-4 punctures a year, which I think is acceptable.
