I live in Denmark and even though we have one of the best cycling infrastructures in the world, I would not choose a cycling holiday in Denmark to one in Austria or Spain. If I did Denmark it would be around the Southern islands. I agree with Brains, the North Sea cycle route is all the same going through Denmark

I was reading a review of a Santiago de Compostella ride this week. The ride was undertaken in June and the big problem was the heat.

I enjoyed going up the coast using the NSCR to Skagen, then we freelanced back down the German border. Made the mistake of going through a historic town, I think the name began with M.... then hit the coast again to get back to Esbjerg. Would I do the NSCR again, no way. Freelance through DK, yes. I have done some of the islands south, not sure I really enjoyed them as much as the freelance down through Jutland. But we love the wild camping (Overnating) sites which made life much easier and cheaper and are much more our style. We've done it twice now (2nd time as part of our attempted world tour), would love to go again, but...

We cycled through southern Denmark to Copenhagen, up to Helsingør, south to Gedser, just under 1000 km (Flenburg - Sønderborg - Fynshavn - ferry to Fyn, around the south of Fyn via Faaborg, Svendborg, up the east coast of Fyn and over to Odense, ferry to Sjælland, east to Roskilde, Copenhagen, north to Helsingør, south along the coast of Sjælland, over to Møn, then to Falster).
We spent another tour on the islands of Langeland, Ærø, Lolland, Falster and Møn.
Both tours were delightful, scenery is varied, villages are charming, Copenhagen is amazing. If you're trying to ride a lot of miles, the small southern islands are probably not the best idea. If you want sleepy and laid back, they're the place to be.

Is freelancing the same as making it up as you go along – If it is then Ive freelanced through most of Western Europe  – To my mind Southern Europe is where it is at – anywhere south of a line drawn about 100 to 150 miles north of the alps – more bang for your bucks

Apart from Norway Northern Europe is very pleasant, generally easy cycling often with well-developed cycling infrastructure and interesting if you have not been before – Norway, however, is difficult to get to, the cycling is often not easy, there is not much cycling infrastructure or infrastructure of any kind at all, the weather can be incredibly inclement and it is stupidly expensive however it is a fantastic place to cycle and I cannot recommend it highly enough.^_^

I like riding in France. The SW, the Pyrenees the big mountain passes dipping into northern Spain and back over into France, or from Grenoble over a few big mountains to Castellane, the Gorge de Verdun, dropping down into Nice . Corsica is beautiful although I've not cycled there. However central and north Wales is pretty good when the weather is fine. I would say Skye but you have to time it right else you get eaten alive by the midges which is pretty much all the time save for 7days at the end of April start of May.

I was sorry not to take in the Verdun when I was last down there. Although the nearby Gorge de Nesque is pretty good too. Lost count of the number of times I've ridden in France, and I always enjoy it

For me, Europe gets more interesting the farther east you go. Montenegro's Piva Gorge was probably the most beautiful place I cycled. And Bosnia was great too. But Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Moldova were all great and easy on the wallet. But if you want western comfort along with western prices, Austria, Italy and (slightly cheaper) Spain are all lovely too.
