Apocalypse Now
Stalag 17
Bridge On The River Kwai
Das Boot
Ran
A Matter Of Life And Death
Catch 22

Give me a bit more time I'll think of some others.

Downfall (has one of the most distressing scenes I have ever seen in a movie)
Enemy At The Gates (only ruined by the silly love scene)
300 (cracking entertainment)
Come And See (as OP said, very brutal, hard to watch)
Battle Of The Bulge (Love Robert Shaw in this)
Deer Hunter (Stomach churning)
We Were Soldiers (Mel Gibson don't let that put you off... vietnam)
Black Hawk Down (relentless action movie, very faithful to the book)
633 Squadron (Those Mosquito planes)
Band Of Brothers (not really a movie - more a series, but brilliant never the less)
Cross Of Iron (Steiner taunting Stransky to go to battle is classic)
Letter From Iwo Jima (as seen from the Japanese perspective)

At last! Also +1 for Das Boot. If you think the film is downbeat, try reading the book. Doubleplusbleak.

I liked some of Thin Red Line. Does Starship Troopers count?

Three good Saturday nights in with a few beers IMO

All we get nowadays is reality bollocks, game shows and voting for some twat with no talent. Bring back old movies....
