Same Greek root I would imagine, mimeme, to imitate. Although meme is altogether a more contrived word than the French même.

Meme was coined by Richard Dawkins as a self replicating idea, analogous to a gene, subject to the same forces of natural selection.

It's a really powerful idea that has somehow come to mean a jpg with words.

My favourite meme is Christianity.

My current favourite cool thing to have on t-shirt is

Anyroad, my favourite meme (in the modern sense of the word) is Doge, of which this is much example;

My daughter went into hospital at the height of Doge's popularity, and I drew her a few Doctor Doges, "Such Medicine" "Very Surgery" &c which lifted her spirits, and may be why I still remember this transient piece of internet daftness so fondly.
