hi all
iv been thinking of covering the spokes on my bike now i have seen it being done with this plastic type sheeting stuff that you stick over and pull tight ect.
now what im thinking is would it work if i used fibreglass i was thinking of covering every or every other spoke with a thin layer of fibreglass letting it dry and then using that to key a sheet of fibreglass matting over covering the spokes.
now is this piratical ? ???
will it work ????

now i have to say im thinking about this as a puerly cosmetic idea im not trying to reduce my drag or wind resistance of any other reason than i think it will look good on my bike.

or dose anyone have any better or cheaper ideas ?

Your idea sounds heavy!
A couple of mates run a model shop, a guy came in a while ago looking to do the same thing. He bought some heat shrink covering film used to cover model aircraft.
You can get it in lots of colours, chequer, carbon effect and clear.
Should be available locally at a good model shop.

that sounds like an idea ill have a look at that my only concern would be how it would hold up to stones, sticks and other road side debris that could flick up and hit it ?

and yea i think it would be heavy but i don't think it would be more than 400 to 500 grams on a 26" wheel at the very most
like i said i was thinking of doing a tight wrap round each or every other spoke so that once its dry it will help key in a sheet of woven fibreglass then letting it dry and applying a second layer if needed i reckon the fibreglass would end up at about 1mm thick so not to heavy but nice and strong so any stones or sticks or anything else that appears on the road wont rip or tear it

thanks

  • Put a fairly light bit of plastic on one spoke
  • Put the bike on a stand
  • Spin the wheel and watch the bike buck on the stand.
  • Ask if you want to have any potential uneven weighting on your spokes?

The bike polo guys do this as it stops the ball going in the net amongst other things

good point i hadent thought about wheel balance could make it interesting you see thats why i like to ask for ideas as a different set of eyes and a working brain can save me a lot of trial and error

Take the handles off of two steel dustbin lids, get some long bolts and bolt the lids to the wheel either side.

that was my first idea but we only got wheelie bins round here

I am sure you can buy covers - these came out when solid wheels cam out, maybe in the 80s.
