What sort of use? What are you replacing?

For general riding around I have the LBS build me some wheels, e.g. Mavic open pro rims on 105 hubs, however everytime I've done this I've either been upgrading some cheapish wheelsets or building a bike from scratch. I don't race, except 'cross.

Going from something like a set of Shimano R500s I find them a considerable improvement, but I don't know how they stack up against the more performance oriented budget wheelsets.

I'm replacing the wheels that came with my bike when I bought it 15 or so months ago so i'm upgrading from cheap wheelsets. It is for general use, commuting as well as going out on weekly/twice weekly 40-60 mile rides.

In which case I'll stand by my original recommendation.

Seconded. OpenPro on 105 is what I have - although I built my own.
Parker have them at a good price in their handbuilt section if your LBS doesnt build wheels.

Stong enough for commuting ... sometimes put CX tyres on mine and take them off-road for a bit of fun, did a 1000 mile tour on them this year with 25 mm tyres, but plenty quick enough for a club run.
