I think it depends on whether you consider the meringue bit to be filling or crust.

There is a worse offender than the basic pastry lid: when they just make puff pastry circles, separately and hours earlier, and drop one on a dish when serving.

I've never sent such an abomination back, thought it was a English thing. I will, from now on.
we used get them occasionally for my junior school diners (although it was shortcrust)... a ladle full of mince & onions in gravy, and a separately cooked slice of pasty on top... loved it! Far far better than the greasy floppy handmade 'crisps' they threw on our plates when he had salad.

a splendid scotch pie made by a local butcher, marvelous fare

I do miss the aussie meat pie. It's the nutritional equivalent of the english kebab: minced "beef" in gravy, wrapped in commercial pastry and topped with tomato sauce (== ketchup). Closest thing I've had in the UK are Eel Pie shop pies, but different. Because they are so popular, most takeaway places have them already to eat in a pie warmer, not cold waiting to be ruined in a microwave; not dried out because of high turnover.

Slightly posher takeaways have a good variety of more gourmet pies, the people here wouldn't sniff at, also always warm and ready.

They are now made in house and they sell 800-1200 per match which isn't bad with a gate of around 1800.

They used to be made by Potts pies.

I had a feeling Pott's would me involved somewhere along the line, their pies used to be excellent, until they put them up to a 'premium' price. One can only pay so much for a pie... no matter how tasty... maybe they didn't want the working classes eating their stuff.
