when is it too windy?

Might as well. Just expect a lower average speed. Wind is annoying but rain is what stops me. I can cope with a bit of wind up to a certain degree. If you do go out then leave the disc wheels behind.

You know it's too windy went starts blowing you backwards or as a sidewind, literally takes the bike from under you.
Been there with both and bloody scary.
On the latter I had to get off the bike then wheel it at a 45% angle to brace myself against it as I was being blown into the road.
Great when the wind comes gale force straight over Northumberland!

I hate strong winds, they're worse than hills. At least on a hill people know why you are struggling whereas in a head wind I bet they just think "Look at that poor old git, he can hardly move on his bike".

21 mph is relatively regular up here... Seems worse this year.

You gotta remember that if you're doing 21 And there's no wind, then you are in a 21 mph headwind.
Add a 21mph headwind and you doing 21mph..... I think you get it?...

Add to that the fact that t will take at least 40% more effort to maintain your speed - and that's if you are able to do so!

If you're doing a circular route, then it evens itself out . Head out into the headwind & just keep thinking of the return journey!

I hate cycling into a headwind - which is generally the home leg of my commute (particularly this evening!). But - the forecast (as it stands) for Thursday is a tailwind in the morning, then a 180 switch in wind direction during the day

Personally, it is too windy for me when you have to cycle standing up just to deliver the effort required to rotate those pedals.

Just consider your ride on more lengthy rides return with wind behind you,though more often than not the wind direction always works gainst you

Depends a lot on the terrain for me, I've been out in 40-60mph winds when I could hug the terrain but I don't think I've been over the Forth Road Bridge in anything over 30mph.
OT the wind down here was only 11mph but it felt 10 times worse as there was no hiding from it.
