It's probably because you are lower to the ground, so a given side force will exert a smaller moment (rotational force) about the tyre/road contact point. (It's proportional to the height at which the force is exerted).I'm still slightly amazed that on the recumbent I seem to feel side gusts only about as much as on my Langster, despite having tailbox, disc wheel and deep section front wheel on the bent. Not exactly sure why that is...
