I lurk all the time and hardly ever post, I'm a bit shy and I hate confromtation so I don't think I would ever raise my voice in CAD. A lot of the threads in there do make me laugh though.

I post a fair bit (tho' lurk more) but one thing I try to avoid is getting involved in arguments on contentious issues. People get very heated sometimes, and not to any good effect that I can see. You very seldom see any evidence of changing minds - 99% of it's huff & puff signifying nothing. I sometimes say what I think, but then I leave it at that. If others disagree, fine. That's their prerogative.

Speak out! What have you got to lose? Even if you post total BS, who's going to notice when the place is knee-deep in it all the time?

I think your right and I am going to try and make my motto - Say what I think, but not get into the Huff Puff Stuff. Thanks all for the little nudges and lets hope you don't regret it

Hell just get on and post - can't hurt can it?

Thing with forums imho is just post away, try to be sensitive (not always easy I admit) and above all don't get miffed if the world doesn't agree with you. I never cease to be amazed at how a single given subject can elicit so many different points of view.

There are lots of barriers to posting of course and a big one I guess is where you want to respond but come up against the *ickheads who are oh so clever at reasoning that it becomes damn nigh impossible to get your (possibly more worthy) pov across. It's not because you are dim or don't know stuff it's just that some people can argue their corner better. Ergo, you give up/don't bother.

Sometimes I think I've made a great point, and keep checking back for reasoned response. Then I realise no-one's bothered and carried on the thread regardless. Not good for the ego is that!

It can all get a bit too addictive when you start logging on just to check the Alerts box for a red tab to see if anyone likes your comment or has responded to your post.

(you'll get a little red flag now, 'cos I have quoted you, I hope your ego is suitably refreshed)

I've done a lot more lurking than posting. I come here primarily for info on bikes and cycling, and to discuss those issues. I have recently started sticking my oar in a bit more to CAD stuff, and I have found some of the heated debates quite interesting, the Belgrano thread was an education in itself. Some other forums I use have an outright ban on political discussion, but there is a fair amount of of politics attached to cycling anyway. As long as people are grown up enough not to carry grudges through from CAD through to the cycling bits (and to people's credit that seems to be the way) then I think it's good to have some heated debate going on.
