We have a lot of conifers..... BIG mistake years ago but we are stuck with it.
They were in serious need of trimming.
Lo and behold a knock on the door. A guy offering to do it (at a fair price) and could do it immediately ie there and then.
Nice van, local phone number etc. He claimed to own the company!!!
Anyway he did a very good job and I happily paid him.
NEXT
The signage on the van said "they" specialise in patios and driveways.
Now, we do needed our patio re doing so got a price.... VERY GOOD PRICE.
Warning bell number 1 was he took no measurements..... said its no problem etc.
2. He was just too cocky.
3. He would start next day (Saturday) when every other company is mad busy.
4. He wanted money up front. I told him NO CHANCE. I would pay materials on delivery and job on completion.
Guess what!!! He didn't turn up.
I phoned the office number and found out he is just a guy that works for them, obviously doing foreigners.

He could be looking for another job come Monday. You kept hold of your money, that's the main thing.

It's upsetting to me to think that people get taken in. Sometimes methinks that kind of fraudulent crime type behaviour is the work of someone truly evil, or desperate, or both.

I reckon generally speaking people naturally want to believe in the good in others. To prey on that takes someone in amongst the worst kind of people imho. It saddens me to think we have to be careful, to be wise to it. I personally would prefer to live without having to suspects people's motivations with seemingly every interaction. Some people genuinely don't think that way. They are to be lauded, not called gullible or whatever.

Still, least you got your conifers seen to, and are happy with the job. That bit sounds like a fair exchange.
