Don't really pass many regulars anyhow, but just going by the bikeshed at work there was a spike in the numbers of bikes a several of weeks back with the first flush of warm weather but it seems to have died off already. Guess people have all these good intentions for summer but...

National Bike Week went by un-noticed at JaguarLandRover. No more bikes in the shed than usual. No free breakfasts. Just an ordinary week as far as I saw it.

A few weeks ago now I caught up with bloke on my way back from York. He was riding an 80s racer lookalike, and it was absolutely knackered. The rims were rusty and buckled. Every few pedal strokes, the chain would slip, one pedal was at an angle of about 45 degrees to the crank (rather than the more traditional 90 degrees) and the other clearly had a severely bent spindle. There was one alloy mudguard that rattled and buzzed against the tyres, and both tyres were rather soft.

The thing is, I drafted this guy doing a good steady 20 mph for a couple of miles.

Put him on a decent bike and he'd be seriously fast.

200 people where I work about 10-12 regular cyclists, gets to 15 or 16 on a sunny day though.
Riding home last night 4 of us down a decent hill doing 30+mph it was like a mini peloton, except 3 of us were on hybriddy bikes

I've noticed a lot more newbies (which I still regard myself as) around recently. I think it's possibly down to the tube strikes and good weather we've had since then.

I'm starting to notice a pattern, that the dangerous cyclists tend to be people on MTB's with nobbly tyres. I've been cut up a few times recently by such types. In particular I've noticed a couple of people doing dangerous overtaking, undertaking and light jumping at junctions, only to be sailed past on the straights because I have thinner wheels and can go faster for the pattern to repeat at the next junction.

Last week when going to work early I was managing to see 20 bikes by the time I had done my first half mile or so, and I did try counting but usually lost count/forgot as I headed into town - certainly over a hundred. Even then I must have been the only one to go around the RAB in primary with all the rest jouseling for elbow room around the edge.

What's RAB?
