If the pensions, holiday pay, sick pay etc was more inline with the private sector there would be more money to spend on patients. This I got from a recently retired 56 year old senior midwife.
But then if they were in line with the private sector there would be little incentive to go and work for the NHS, so they'd have to up the salaries to match the private sector instead, leaving little NET benefit.
