Relatively standard fayre from the major manufacturers, I used them because of their prices (friend with trade account) and location, but they were pretty helpful and had exactly what I wanted on display.

You don't think what?
You are not going to get much for a grand if you want good quality and fitted.

We bought bath , bog and taps for sink and bath
from our local bathroom merchant, basin and vanity came from IKEA ( don't knock it , it's good stuff) wastes came from local builders suppliers , all Wavin stuff .
We bought end of lines, and spent £600 on bath bog n taps. Basin n vanity was £200
And nothing wrong with Victoria plumb . We got our shower tray and cubicle from there £450 in sale and it has been the best one we have ever had. You will need a good installer. This is the hard part. If the installer you have says avoid VP and bath store then it could be they want to provide the materials with a mark up. However if they are good quality installer, it's worth using them. ( material mark up is where you make the money back you cut out of the labour price to make labour look cheap.

I fitted mine as I have the time and skill and patience to so saved massive amounts on labour costs. You are looking at 2 days to do the hardware then another 2 for tiling and then another 2 for painting if there is any ( there will be) that's £750 for a start on day rates for the guys doing it, price work is based on a days money .

I don't know if there is a Better Bathrooms near you, but based upon a friend's experience up here, one to avoid. - And they were doing supply only.

One reason it is cheaper to buy things yourself is that if the installer is registered for VAT, I think they charge you VAT on top of the price they paid for the items (which already include VAT). i.e they bill you for their time, and for materials, then apply VAT to the total.
(I may have got this wrong, but this is what I was told when I was having a bathroom done on the cheap - I ordered the bits and also took the old stuff to the tip in my car).
It's also the reason why discount carpet places sort you out with fitters, but you pay the fitters directly. If the fitters are not VAT registered there is no VAT on the fitting, whereas if the (definitely VAT-registered) carpet warehouse paid for the fitters for you, they would have to stick the VAT on top. Or that's the reason they gave me anyway!

I didn't say that. It's 1K + tiles + fitting.

Are you saying that 1K for a bath/sink/toilet and shower mixer is stingy?
Depends what quality you want and whether sizing is standard

Wickes stuff seems decent and they often have big discounts

Personally, I used a local place of good reputation. 10 years ago, the suite cost me around 2k, but that's a non standard size steel bath (hate plastic ones), sottini sink and loo, and I needed an expensive casing to go round the toilet due to pipe placement (was around £500). I also had expensive taste in taps!

The one place I wouldn't use is bathstore, I think Victoria Plumb are OK as they sell branded stuff

Probably depends on how fussy you are

My whole bathroom probably ended up around £7k back then, with tiles, labour, finishing kit etc

So - It's:
  1. 1K for sanitary ware - I am not having a shower cubicle, just a shower fitting in the bath
  2. I have a very good fitter who I have known for years - fitting is extra
  3. Tiles are extra
The whole budget is about 3k or just over.

Sounds like Mrs Thomk...

Actually Mrs Thonk is negotiating and the sanitary ware might end up being 2k
