I guess this is a common thread with lots of you. I'm thinking of doing something adventurous again in 3-4-5 years time. I know its a long way off, but as it is freezing out, we are still in January and I'm still trying to burn off the excesses of Christmas, I thought I'd spice up my boring day with this question. Where to go next?! (Watching Bike channel and longing to be back on the road)

OK, so I've cycled across America which was a great adventure, but I think 3months is too long for the next trip. I've done the length of France, which was amazing, over 3weeks. Both of these were van supported and I'd like the next one to be as well. I like the sun and not the cold. Do I just have a base camp and go out exploring each day in different directions, or do a trip like the coast to coast. It would have to be a challenge - I think. The length of Italy or at least a tour around parts of it.

So, ideas?

Van support may be convenient but hardly an adventure. Solo, self supported bike tours can be an adventure wherever you go.

I dont know, cycling across the plains of Kansas, over the Rockies, seeing buffalo and bears, then in France going up and over the Central Massif on the route I designed, up Ventoux and around the Ardeche in blistering heat days after Le Tour has passed through is pretty adventurous. I don't do self contained, I find it pointless and I leave it up to other people. So, not really a helpful comment on OP.

Agree not very helpful to the OP - But its a valid comment - Us "proper" ^_^ tourers don't really regard "supported" as touring - supported is just a loada day rides one after another

If I had wanted a discussion on which is better or proper, I would have started a thread with that title and question. As it is... I guess this is just pointless and a waste of time asking serious questions on this particular forum

Start Eurovelo 6 at the french coast and head east.
Stop either when out of time or out of land ...... ^_^
One option is to head north somewhere before heading back west.
I've turned at Linz aiming for the Elbe and at the Black Sea aiming for the Baltic.
The short option is around 2,000 miles and the long one 6,000 .......

As it is... I guess this is just pointless and a waste of time asking serious questions on this particular forum
I think you're being a bit harsh, you must surely accept your approach to cycle touring is highly unconventional and is bound to get varying reactions.

Van support may be convenient but hardly an adventure. Solo, self supported bike tours can be an adventure wherever you go.

I have done lots of solo, unsupported cycling around europe. A couple of years agoI decided that I did not want to waste time getting to places I really wanted to cycle at. But I also wanted to stay out in the open, in nature.

So I bought myself a box trailer, which I use to store my bikes in during the winter. During the Spring and summer we use it for transporting the bikes and camping in it. We park up, load our gear on bikes and go touring for a few days.

Then we miss the boring bit and get to the next interesting bit to tour in.

It makes perfect sense and is just as much adventure as the usual cycle touring.

But you said "It would have to be a challenge", tbh many people (myself included) wouldn't see any van supported trip as any challenge at all.

That's a bit narrow minded. So if the multi-day tour included various physically challenging rides, but included van support, you'd dismiss it as "easy"?

Of course, you always have a "get out", and if you then fail you'll be picked up, so how can that not be "easy"?

When I start to read travel reports I always avoid "supported" ones, it's not being narrow minded, they just don't do anything to fire my imagination.

It depends on how far you have to travel to do the rides. When I rode in the French Alps, Mont Ventoux and French side of the Pyrenees in September, I was grateful for the tour company's support, because travelling across the world to do a self-supported tour would have required more planning than I was willing to do. There was the chance my bicycle would get damaged in transit, and my unfamiliarity with Europe, to consider, so I was more than happy to pay a company to reduce a lot of that hassle for me, particularly since the rides themselves were very physically challenging.
I find your dismissive attitude towards any type of cycle touring not fitting your preconceived notion of what's interesting pretty disappointing.
