Where to ride when road split's into two?

If your on a road that then suddenly splits into two, what is the correct way?.

Currently I stay left in the left lane then move over to the right lane when that lane comes to an end and take primary or can I be in the right lane and still be slightly left? as primary really really would hold everyone back.




Second when filtering at lights where your at crossroads, if theres no asl where to you position yourself?, I normally go in front of the vehicle in the middle but then I can be to far forward and cant see the lights.

I would personally be in the right hand lane but in secondary. If you shot across at the last moment you'd surprise a lot of drivers.

As for filtering when there's no ASL - I personally don't do it. There's nowhere to safely go, it's safer just to hang back with the rest of the traffic. You really aren't saving much time as it is anyway, and being in traffic means you can just follow everybody else instead of leading the pack.

What to do when the road goes multi-lane? Well it really does depend on the road & where I'm going. For a 30mph & turning right I'll take primary in the off-side lane & go at a fast pace, which for me is near 30mph. I'm a little more cautious on higher limits, I'll take primary in the off-side lane at full sprint pace for the distance if going up to 600m once over that I'll take up secondary & with about 400 to go move to the outside of the nearside lane before going to the off-side lane (hence where I get the 600m sprinting from, if it's less than that 600m it's hard to find the gaps in traffic to manoeuvre safely) & hitting full sprint pace. On some roads there's enough space for in-lane overtaking or at least enough space for 2 cars + a cyclist, on these I tend to quickly take a 'continental secondary' until the lights, most of the time even without signalling motorists generally have a good idea what you're doing.

Once at the junction I'll filter forwards to take take up primary behind the first few cars at the front of the line. I rarely take the ASL box for multi-lane right turns when turning right as I've seen a few too many undertakes where the nearside driver guns it off the line - this is only happens with the first 1 or 2 cars hence why I sit back a few cars from the front, if there's going to be a crunch it'll be with 2 metal boxes not a metal box & me!

I don't understand what you are saying in the first example. Google street view?

Filtering with no asl? I stop a few cars back. That way you don't hold the first few cars up, you cab see the lights and you are unlikely to be hit by an Amber gambler.

I want to go straingt on and so need to be in one of the right hand lanes, I will move out to the middle and cruise on the right of the thick white line. If I stay left I have to eventually cross two lanes to get to my lane...all of which is fast moving and busy. (if you advance the street view you will see how the road opens up into four lanes and splits)

The down side of my move is that often cars wish to do the opposite and are too busy looking behind to make sure they are not about to carve across someone that they dont think about slow moving vehicles being in the middle of the road, I saw a really close miss once as a car did just this and swerved at the last minute.


So, do lots and lots and lots of rear obs when riding the middle of this type of road.
