Oh yeah, the Head Of Steam at Huddersfield Railway station. Loads of real ale and live music, and the Station Tavern at Dewsbury. Awesome. Visited by James May

The White Horse, South Lopham (Norfolk). Occasionally we turn up on a Sunday with half a dozen German Shepherds and the landlord doesn't bat an eyelid

The Wellington, Birmingham.
The British Oak, Stirchley

+1 Shame my sister no longer lives round the corner from it:sad:

Pipe and Glass at South Dalton - they even opened early especially for a CTC ride recently:smile:
The White Horse aka Nelly's in Beverley - very atmospheric and still lit by gas lights.

I think you can still get Sam Smiths bitter at the Oyster Bar for under two quid a pint.

Sam Smith's in Nellies (as mentioned by Helen) - untouched, gas lamps, open fires and £1.70 for a pint of stout!

These photos don't really do it justice:

The place really comes into it's own on dark, winter nights.

Bon Accord is the only boozer in Glasgow for me

In Edinburgh however
Guilford Arms
Berts bar
Blue Blazer
Cafe Royal

Not fussed with these over priced old stylee theme pubs but the traditional boozer is fast dying out even diggers isn't the same anymore since 80/- isn't made by S & N now and the management changed

Thanks, I'll try those...

The Dome is the place for me in Edinburgh.
I used to occasion Oloroso, until they went downhill
Apart from that, I find that Edinburgh has a lot of pleasant local, yet welcoming, pubs.

+1 for the Station bar in Dewsbury - also add The John F Kennedy in the same town.

As for the Sair - I've (mis)spent many a night in there drinking Enochs Hammer and talking to the duck (don't ask).

The Nook in Holmfirth is much the same - but with a slightly lower level of surealness.

A pub that has survived almost unchanged from my youth in Darlington is The Brittania. It used to be part of the Camerons estate but appears to be a free house. It had no Strongarm on tap when I was there a couple of days ago but there was sufficient choice of real ales to compensate.

I'm still fond of the Tan Hill Inn near where North Yorkshire, County Durham and Westmoreland met and, weather permitting, will be cycling there on News Year's Day.

Then there's the Falcon Inn at Arncliffe, North Yorkshire with one of the bluntest speaking landlords that I've ever met. The beer is poured from a barrel into a jug before being decanted into a glass. It's worth a visit to step back in time by five or so decades - the decor and outside privvy have not kept up with the times but add to the charm of the place. Don't arrive too close to closing time or you'll get short shrift.

Last but not least is the Holly Hill in Richmond, North Yorkshire. A decent quiet pub away from the centre of Richmond.

Not nearly as good as it used to be in there. Staff are shocking! The Harlequin group of rests are nowhere as good as they were after Charan Ghill sold them.

I'll give you better places to try next time you're over here

I always enjoyed Cafe India on visits to Glasgow. It wasn't the best for food but great atmosphere.

The sound engineer that worked for me when I managed a band is from Glasgow. He took me and the wife to an Indian not very far from Cafe India. It wasn't much more than a small terraced house without about 4 tables but it was awesome. Can't recall the name of the place.

The Wishing Well, Heywood - real ale and live music.
The Trackside, Bury - on the platform of the steam train station, and real ale.

3 wks to go, and counting.

That's a good pub ... I used to drop in there regularly: when the company I worked for had a yard in Heywood I used to park up there a lot and I always made a point of going to the Well for a few after work pints.

+1 for the Victoria. I'm unconvinced by The Welly - beer's good, but the place lacks any atmosphere.

In Brum has got to be The Anchor in Digbeth, which has long been me favourite pub. Elsewhere, Beacon Hotel in Sedgley is pretty fantastic and Great Western in Wolverhampton.
