As a teenager in the early to mid 70's I always wanted one of these. Never could afford one though. A Triumph TR6

As a lad I thought these were dead posh

There is a white one rotting away near a friends house in Cambridge.
We had one of them before I drove. I remember my BiL nearly burning the clutch out trying to get it on some ramps and it taking us two days to get a ball joint apart. I think we may have actually sawn the arm in half to get it into a postion we could get the splitter on.

My first 2 cars were the "old" minis. The first was £50 with bucket seats and Weller wheels, it also had a blown engine. I got a written off 1100 mini for free if I took it away and swapped the engines. I rolled it a few months later and got a rust bucket 850 for £35 that needed new A panels, sills and floor panels. My dada had it welded by one of his mates and I rubbed it down, and another of his mates sprayed it Brg with a white roof. That one dropped a valve on the M25 and I sold it to my brother.
My boss has 4 of them and even in rough condtion they are worth £10k plus.
I keep thinking I want another one, but then I remember how small they actually are, how the heater did not work that well or clear the windscreen when it was raining and how small the petrol tank is, I would probably have to fill up every day just to commute to work.

The first car I can remember by dad having was a maroon coloured Ford Anglia

I can just about recall its demise....quite near us was a stock car racing track. One of our neighbours used to occasionally compete. Somehow, he ended up entering in my Dad's Ford Anglia which was presumably on its last legs. We went along to watch. The Ford Anglia lasted about two laps before the floor fell out and was retired from the race. Last I ever saw of it

Ford Anglia.
I never owned one but learned to drive and passed my test in one when I was 17.....that would be 1964ish.
I then got a job in Liverpool and the boss used to send me on small jobs.... in his Anglia.

I remember being a little 'un and falling asleep in the back of my father's grey Standard Ensign Estate -no seat belts in those days. I also seem to recollect you could used a starter handle with this, but I may be just imagining that (picture from interwebs).

In between here and there
My first car, bought the day before I took my test at 17 and 3 months. I was a bit naughty really I lied on the finance form and put my mum down as guarantor... It was a 1976 so 7 years old when I bought it, it really was Police bait in SE London in the early eighties. Before I was 17 and 6 months I had been banned for 3 months, for speeding on the M1, admittedly I was going rather fast at 3am but I had just stuck some Weber's, straight through exhaust and Revolution wheels it. Sounded lovely until I slowed down and they turned on the blue lights

KDR 131P that how often I had to repeat it.
I had 4 more of them..

My friend used to drive his dads... like a bloody maniac! It wasn't exactly a cool car to drive for a teenager in the eighties mind you, but he did try his best.

Interestingly one was used in the sci-fi film Gattaca. You could tell by its lines and when I saw it, it did strike me as being a bit cool.

My first car was my mum's old

Loved it to bits. It could turn on a sixpence. Riddled with rust (you could see the road beneath your feet, and when it rained heavily you'd arrive with soaked shoes). Excellent to drive. Sadly had to scrap it in the end after a wheel fell off.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's, my dad had a selection of the British motor industries finest products - several Maxis, a Princess, a couple of Chevettes and then a Maestro.

So naturally when I bought my first car I kept right away from that sort of rubbish and headed straight to the blue oval and got a Mark II Escort Ghia 1.6 in harvest gold with a brown vinyl roof for £150.
That car rocked - and even more so when I added a Britax pop-out sunroof, two-up two-down driving lights and a stereo with some of the biggest Kenwood speakers you've ever seen on the rear shelf. It also remains the only car I've ever made a profit on when selling it. Mind you, it would be worth £10k+ today...

After selling the Escort, I bought an Opel Kadett 1.6 SR (same shape as the Mk1 Astra) which was a proper 80's boy racer car and like many cars of the era, already busy eating itself.

My first car was a Morris 1000 pick up. Great fun on crossply remoulds and wet roads. I learned a lot about oversteering in this. Never took a wet roadabout anything other than sideways! I'd love to know what happened to GJW 238 C.

I later had 3 Morris Travellers of my own and a Morris 1000 van at work.
