Light oil.

Put your tin hat on, this one's going to run and run. See also "should I wear a helmet?" and "Does anyone give a toss whether William Hague is gay?"

Everyone has their own favourite lube discovered by spending lots of cash and deciding which is 'best'.

Opinions vary too about whether black gunge is harmful or harmless, but I like a clean looking chain. 'Wet' lubes attract too much dirt for my liking, so I go for the 'dry' variety. My current fave is Finish Line Teflon Plus Dry chain lube. I've found it holds up pretty well even in the wet but needs a more frequent application. The payoff is a relatively gunge free chain compared to the wet varieties.

I make my own up, I mix colmans white spirit with a teflon grease and some fork oil and some cooking oil, and that seems to work ok
also it smells nice like fish and chips:-)

As Baz says which specific lube to use is down to the individual but I'd recommend Finnish Line, there'll be something in their range to suit. I'm currently using their 'extreme cross country' stuff (green top) on my hybrid, its extremely robust but does attract dirt. On the road bikes I'm using Pro Road Ceramic lube (Gold Top); its now superseded by Ceramic Wet and Dry and my mate swears by the Teflon dry stuff (red top).

Any of the above should be good enough, perhaps the "best" is subjective. As long as you keep to a regime of chain cleaning/lubing, your drivetrain will thank you for it

I agree, any lube works. They only stop when they get washed off. A bike chain is hardly a heavy engineering problem after all.

Motorcyclists often fit Scottoilers, an automatic drip feed of oil that turns on with the ignition. Something similar might be good in the wet. That or take a small can and drip a bit on when you stop for lunch. I do this when I'm touring, a light dribble of oil, then ride it. Wipe the excess off later, or let it accumulate on the jockey wheels.

Prolink. Little and often. Use 'luber' or similar. Wipe clean. Used exclusively on bike from new, 7000+ miles, no measurable chain wear.

Finish line Teflon plus Dry (red top) in the summer and light rain / wet conditions

Finish Line Cross Country (green top) in the harsh cold winter conditions

I've never had a problem with either of them, coat the chain, spin round a few times, wipe off excess
