Very tempted to say 70s, but it was at least silly and fun in a way the 80s weren't. Top of the pops from then looks more like a kids party without jelly and ice cream.
Saying that in the mid-80s, most of us either wore chinos and a shirt (Ben Sherman featured quite a bit) or Levis and a t-shirt. Basically indistinguishable from many people in "casual" or "smart casual" today. Then came dance/rave music, ecstacy and everything changed.
I agree with the modern baggy-crotch thing though - looks like you're carrying a full collostomy bag. And sportswear should be for sports especially if you are middle-aged and borderline obese. Under no circumstances should husband and wife EVER go out in matching "his 'n her". Sorry that goes for cycling gear too.
Basically as you get older, I guess grooming becomes more important. Somewhere around 28, the grunge look morphs into the tramp look.
I wanted a panama hat this summer but couldn't get a genuine "Dan Cruickshank" in my size.
