Indeed, its written into the latest round of NCAP updates due about now. Cars with essential functions such as ventilation etc solely in the touchscreen will lose points.

It isn't illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, so long as you don't hold it in your hand. Using it in a cradle ios legal, and that is a much smaller screen that you need to look at much more closely

I hated the fact I had to use a touchscreen to change cabinet temperature in my old car. Thankfully my new EV has actual buttons for the basic stuff, though you can mess with it via the touchscreen too. It’s a feature that sold me on the car.

A. Mobile telephony device. Thats not just phones, but smart watches, tablets, etc, connected to a public telecommunications network.

B. Holding a mobile phone while driving. As you say, it isnt unlawful to have a phone on a cradle and tap the green button when a call comes in, but dialling a full phone number, scrolling though the menus or an app, etc, even while in the cradle while get you in bother. You can't evrn have it in your hand even just to pass to another person to answer on your behalf.

My phone has always been in my pocket when driving, but I could always receive a call just by pressing a button on the steering wheel, or make one using voice control. Very rarely did so, and only very short when I did.

The only time the phone isn't in my pocket is when driving the Camper, which doesn't have in built satnav (and of course I am more often going to unfamiliar destinations in that), so I have it doing the satnav for me, clipped in to a holder above the dashboard. But even then, I never touch it while driving, just set the destination before I start.

I pay a supplement to have use of Grok in my Tesla. Following a recent upgrade she/it can voice control most things, or at worst present the correct (of many) screen to press. It's step forward, but my i3 is still much better resolved, with conventional button & stalk controls, or an intuitive control knob.

Very true.
I maintain that I will never buy a car that can only be operated using a touchscreen. Buttons or no sale.

The problem with that attitude is that that are saying it correctly while us Brits are saying it incorrectly.
