It's already working in buses.
I ran an LPG van, the donut tanks work, but I realise your methane tank might be ugly, and it's positioning in a car is problematic.
I spose it depends what you value most.

Show me a clean long-life battery and I'll show you a slavish-labour mining industry.

The materials used in batteries are also used in many other everyday items.
"Clean" they may not be (though not as "dirty" as some like to claim), but short-life they certainly aren't.

It's far worse than LPG as it cannot be liquified at room temp without very high pressures that would mean far heavier tanks. LPG can be stored in tanks at pressures of the order of bicycle tyres, but LNG needs cryogenic cooling for the same pressures to be viable.

It's not remotely a solution for private cars.

Fiat had a 1990s methane Seicento. I'll try to look it up -
edit - maybe I was thinking of the Elettra.
