I"m thinking of changing my car for something a bit more sensible (and smaller). Skoda Elroq might fit the bill, so on my way home from Bristol I dropped in to a main Skoda dealership. It's Friday lunchtime.
Picture the scene: big glass front, automatic opening door, half a dozen cars on display, one employee half way down the left hand wall at a desk, two further bods right at the back at desks, one possibly on the telephone. All three looked like they were doing something but I know not what. No other customers or potential customers in there. Marie Celeste.
Doors open, I walk in. I look around. I spot an Elroq near the entrance, just what I'm looking for. I walk over to it, open rear door look at legroom, open drivers door, get in front seat, adjust for my driving position, check out the controls. Get out. Check rear legroom again. Plenty. Close doors. Open boot, look to see what size. Decent. Close boot. Walk around car. Look around the showroom. Walk over to a Karoq, repeat most of the above. Walk back to the Elroq. Stand by it, look around. Walk to the auto opening doors, stop and look around, doors open and I walk out. The three sales fellows still trying to look busy.
I'd arrived in a 21 year old Peugeot Partner (Belingo). Would I have got a different response if I'd arrived in my Ioniq 5 AWD starship?
The sales manager needs sacking.
