Which Hybrid bike to buy?

Looking for hybrid bike for commuting and tow path type cycling. V confused about which make, model and componentry to buy. Bike sellers all seem biased. One says Shimano components throughout is best. But which type of gears and brakes? Is it best to keep them low cost to minimise replacement/repair costs? Budget - £450 max. Less is better. Advice please.

Similar requirements as you , and research/advice led to to look at the Trek range , decided to buy fairly local instead of internet so can get back up off dealer . Chose a Trek Hybrid 8.2 DS £400 , 1st little outing yesterday to get used to gears .

I have a trusty Specialized Sirrus Elite and that fits the bill very well.

I got a Raleigh Urban 2, around £330 but you could get a 3 for that money easily, around £400 - Has running gear upgrade and fork upgrade.
