Hi

Which Hybrid bike would you recommend for £400 budget?
Uses? Terrain?
Presumably rigid forks not suspension

How tall are you as this company has lots of great deals on older models, but often in only one size

That Dawes DIscovery 201EQ at £399 looks a good do-it-all bike, different bars (or bar ends) and that would do my commute, canal trips and Dales tours right out of the box. I am sure those bikes were about £250 not many years ago. I have had a few Discoverys and they've all been problem free despite a load of abuse. If it was for fun/getting fit those Merida Speedsters look just the job.

Thanks for the replies...

I was thinking along the lines of these bikes ... if they're any good?

I've got some country roads around where I live and some nice woods with trails and a big park with a path so that kind of thing.

I'm 5"10.

I don't know what would be better between rigid forkes and suspension etc. don't know much about bikes really. I did have a CAAD8 a few years ago but I feel I was mis-sold it really. I tried a medium size and was told I was too big for it, so I went to another store where I bought the 56cm and ended up buying that but I never felt comfortable on it, always felt too stretched out and that the bike was too big for me despite going back and having a bike fit to see if it was ok for me, the guy doing the fit said it was fine for me but I could only touch the floor with my toes when sitting on the saddle and there was no clearance at all standing over the top bar, was a bit like getting on a gate so I sold it.

Hybrids look like more what I am after, a more relaxed position and not the racier position of a road bike, and that they are good on trails as well as roads.

Cannondale Quick 6, great bike and if you're in luck size wise you can get one for a smidge over 400 right now which is a bargain.

Four hundred quid is tight for new, but there are a couple of Ridgebacks that may suit.

The Motion leaves you with £1 change,.

Pushing the budget by £50 gets you an equipped Speed.

A small discount is probably available on both bikes.

A reasonable target would be getting a Speed on budget.

You can also pick up a Vanteo for around £450 on a couple of sites, most sizes still available.

Go Outdoors are selling the Calibre stitch for £400 plus an extra 15% off if you buy a £5 discount card. Downside is the bike is delivered with a lot of assembly required.

The Vanteo above looks good, the only trouble with bikes in this price range are the poor puncture protection of the supplied tyres. I had some Schwalbe Citizens and had to bin them as they were so poor but apart from that not much to complain about for the money. You can just run them until you get fed up with them.

I've not had an answer to my question above if anyone would be so kind to take notice please...?

I asked if these kind of bikes would be worth considering...

Sorry, I missed your question.

They're all very closely comparable. I've got a Trek 7.3 FX (quite an old one, I've had it about 9 years) and a newish Giant Escape 3 (but non-disc). I like them both, they're both quickish for a non-road bike and they're both equally fun on trails. My Giant does feel lighter and more sprightly but then the Trek was set up as a commuter bike, so it has mudguards and a rack which could be the reason.
Choose any of those three and you can't really go wrong, they're all good bikes. Getting the right size is more key, Giant come up quite big, I'm a large on other makes and only a M/L on Giants. I'm 6 foot.

You asked about the Cannondale Quick 6 and if it was better... well again it's in that bracket, and closely comparable to those. I just really like the colour and the fact that they're less common than a Specialized, so if I had the choice between all these bikes that's what I'd go for. Then the Giant, then the Trek, then the Spesh last.
