Could anyone give some advice, or their experiences of, the Boardman Hybrid Comp, Trek 7.3FX and Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc please. Bike is not for commuting, more for fitness and day touring and my budget is capped at £500. Thanks!

I bought a new Trek 7.3 FX Disc a few weeks ago and have done several hundred miles on it. I found the Bontrager saddle purgatory which I cured by fitting a Brookes. Because of the "Iso-zone" type handlebars, which have a soft insert at each end to reduce shock into the hands, I was unable to fit bar ends. The original bars have therefore joined the saddle in the shed and the bike now sports conventional handlebars with bar ends. I find the bike really comfortable to ride and have done a number of 50+ mile rides without problem

Really helpful advice - much appreciated, thanks. Tried out the Boardman today - seems very good value for money given the look, components, finish, although a few too many CB graphics for me! Yet to try the Specialized but maybe it's the name you pay for?

Not here offten enough to argue
Scott sub 40 - very good spec, light and comes in at 450. Money left for accessories

The Crosstrail has suspension and fat tyres so it'll be comfy but slower on the road that a rigid bike. Unfortunately, Specialized don't make the Sirrus with disc brakes, but is a top fast hybrid. Mine has always stopped ok though!

Well mine has a rack and full mudflaps, but I think they are around 10.5kg unadorned  I had a 2010 Crosstrail. they are 15-16kg stock (that's without disc brakes)

Have a Boardman hybrid and really like it - should be available for less than £500 (try NUSMAY12 code for 10% discount).

Oaf on a Bike
The Giant Roam was in previous years near identical to the Crosstrail in terms of spec and price if youre looking for a good deal might be worth checking prices too.
