I am shortly going to buy a Hybrid Bike via the cycle to work scheme and wondered if anyone out there has any ideas on what I should consider. I cycle mostly on canal paths but also on roads. Most off road is fairly gentle. I have a ceiling of £600 to spend. My current favourite is the Ridgeback Flight 01 2012. I am told disc brakes are desirable, particularly in the wet. Any suggestions or advice would be welcome. I am not a novice but have been trundling about on an old Diamondback mountain bike for about 9 years and would like to travel faster.

Many opt for a Boardman Hybrid which always seems priced for that £500 limit.
It's often said to give unbeatable 'bangs for the buck'

Or a Specialized Sirrus, although you may need to add tougher tyres if not going on road much (essentially a flat bar road bike / fast hybrid)

Or a leftfield choice with Disc brakes if you have flexibility on the voucher - the Whyte Portobello

or the 2012 if not and can push the budget despite the ceiling ;)

Thanks for your suggestions. Anyone out there have a view on the Ridgeback Flight series or even the Felt bikes ? My shortlist (which expands and contracts on a regular basis) was : Cannondale Bad Boy Fatty 2012, Scott Sportster 55 2012, Felt QX 80 (or the QX 75) 2012, GT Transeo 3 and the Ridgeback Flight 01 2012.

Again, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Excuse my ignorance, but why the Trek range ?

I have just bought a Trek FX 7.3 with disc brakes. Love it, it rolls along a treat. My only little gripe is that I cannot fit bar ends onto the existing bars so may have to look at changing the bars.

I think Trek have it right with the frame.. its very popular, tried and tested so to speak
Pound for pound you ( usually ) get better components than the competition
Carbon fork and decent wheelsets ( on the higher spec models ) make it fairly light for a hybrid
If you compare the groupset on the bikes you are looking at compared to the Trek 7.5fx, the Trek is at least a model up on them all
I would hazard a guess that the 7.5 is a fair few pounds lighter than the others, with a carbon fork rather than the heavy ncx suspension, better parts and lighter frame
The fx has been a big seller for years so I think that helps with production costs and hence retail price
Have fun whichever bike you eventually choose.

Spend 250 on the bike and the rest on DRINK:

Edit: Oops caliper brakes. Never mind eh. Look at the price.

Many thanks for your contributions. I am put off by the apparent inability of the Trek to take bull horns. I am between the Felt QX 75 2012, the Ridgeback Flight 01 2012 and the Cannondale Quick CX 2012. Anyone give me a 'steer' ?

Quick cx is more off roady, the quick 3/4 are the equuivalents to thr Flight. I think the flights more 'racy' although my Quick 3 is, er, quick! Very comfy too.
