Which is better or are they about equal ?

With a group, you force the pace and therefore you improve overall both on fitness and technique as you learn from others. They bonus is the company, the banter and sharing of experiences.

Alot of people ride solo because they have family and work challenges that a group ride on a commitment level is not possible.

Then we have the lone wolf who prefers to enjoy nature's bounty .. Landscape , scenery and for many to achieve some personal goals.

A combination would be good.

Maybe a silly question but anyway -
Which is better ? Opinions please.

Me today as single rider - average speed of 17.5mph over 72 miles
or
One of a group of 16 riders with group average of 20mph

Elevation gain about the same at 3000ft
I think that's a very flat route.

Would someone who achieved that have to be professional/clued up then? I'm guessing it's not possible to achieve that on your own?

It's perfectly possible but you'd have to have been riding a while to built up to that level. And if you've been riding a while you'd be able to answer the question yourself.

I know what you mean even if the rest of them either don't or are too pedantic to give you a straight answer. I don't know the answer you seek though
