Which is the better of the following road bikes?

Trek and not because I am biased, it will be fine for any type of riding and also more forgiving as the riding position is slightly more relaxed, the Cannondale is a very close second but the position may be a bit harsh for a new rider.

Unlikely to be a concern (flipping the stem over will account for the difference in head tube length pretty much) but even so the CAAD8 has a taller head tube than the CAAD10 to (according to the blurb), so it is a tiny bit more upright than a "full on racer".

It's not like I would like to have had an answer, but, I'll ask again for no reason whatsoever... Although the Trek has more gears, does that mean it has both more high and low gears than the Cannondale?

What sort of terrain will you be riding?
How are you built - Mr average, heavyset, or skinny mountain goat and racing snake?
How fit are you - do you already have many miles in your legs from previous riding?

The terrain isn't that bad to be honest, there are a lot of hills but they're not too steep. Just over average and I'd say probably about 250 miles on a mountain bike.

Any bike will really suit. Do you have an Evans cycles near you and a debit card - they are very agreeable on test rides of bikes in stock, go and have a ride of the options and see which works best for you

Do you know if the highest gears are the same on both bikes so to speak? Or will it be higher on the Cannondale?

No idea, gear ratios all Greek to me

Post the actual information, don't expect people to find it themselves in your links and someone will help.

The "better" bike as your first post is not purely defined by its gearing...depends on your needs, preferences etc, as I said before

easiest to pedal up hill goes Trek with 30:28, Defy 34:32, Cannondale 34:26, Specialised 34:25.
Fastest down hill/ hardest to pedal Trek with 50:11 and Giant 50:11 joint, then cannondale/ specialised joint 50:12.
Trek will have the most choice of gears as well as being easiest up a hill and joint "fastest" down it (far more goes into your top speed than how big your top gear is, don't get hung up on it!)
