I have only had the 3, 5 and 6 speed Bromptons: as far as the 6-speed goes, I have the Sram hub. The only issues have been grit in the guide wheel slider, and the rusting of the outer gear cable. This latter has been solved by replacing the SIS outer with an ordinary, non-indexed outer which gives the inner cable more space. The 3-pseed hub used is far more efficient than any hub gear with more gears, and is much lighter for carrying.

My BWR (Brompton Wide Range) six speed hasn't given any trouble.

How much is the bike going to be used?

The few problems I've read about have been on bikes doing lots of commuting miles.

I don't think the six speed can fairly be classified as universally troublesome, so choose the gears which best suit the wife.
