Looking for a new commuter bike (to replace a Sirrus which is too big for me and has upset my elbow), I have got around £400

...key things = reasonably light, looks decent, solid and reliable, needs to take mudguards. Disc brakes would be good I think as I would like to try to commute in less than clement weather often in heavy traffic. I would prefer to buy in store, but will consider mail order. Probably need a 19-20" / 55cm frame. Happy with a 2011 bike, like a good deal  I don't want suspension, and I'll probably stick 28mm tyres on at some point

These have caught my eye as possibles...

I probably don't want another Sirrus, but I can get this locally for £350 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/sirrus-sport-2011-hybrid-bike-ec023997

I have texted about a couple of Sirrus on Gumtree but no response, not the best way to sell something

Anything else, Marins have always appealed but rather poverty specced in that price range

I've found people often don't text back, it's always better to call. Any chance you could swap stems (shorter or with more of a rise) on your Sirrus to help with your elbow problem?

Why do you not want another sirrus, comfort out of the three its the fastest looking bike. The cannondale looks a downgrade to me (I could be wrong but I reckon its overdoing the quick bit in its advert and won't be as quick). If its discs you want I quite like the look of the Felt, its probably comparable in frame weight to the Cannondale and is better specced, its just a pity you can't see it in the flesh.

That Felt Bike is the one you want! Leave the Cannondale.

ORANGE X/C are some of the best bicycles for combination riding.

Thanks for all the replies

Sirrus is an XL, 60-61cm frame

I have already changed the stem, I will try tilting up the bars as it is an adjustable stem

Not a big fan of Cannondale

Sirrus - I think it would annoy me having a less specced bike even though it has the same name, and good Lord it's boring to look at (same goes for the Cannondale too)

The Halfords branches are all utterly appalling around here and Carrera is a bit no brand bso for me (in my mind, might be total balls but hey) and they all look like they weigh a ton and lack any style and charisma imo

I will have to call up the Gumtree peeps as still no answer to texts

I love my Sirrus, but I have to agree with you, black is bloody boring colour!
Mine is currently a work in progress & undergoing some beautifying ;)

There's nothing else for it, you'll just have to grow to fit your sirrus

Unfortunately at my age, I am not going to grow lol !!

I have adjusted the stem so I'll need to see if it is ok once the tennis elbow has settled
