I'm looking to get a pannier set for my raleigh, first timer so any advice welcome.

As a first timer, you may not have thought of heel clearance.

Too little, and your heel clouts the leading edge of the bag every pedal revolution.

Much will depend on your bike and rack - a properly fitted pannier rack will be set well back to increase clearance.

An ordinary carrier will be closer to the seatpost which will restrict the size of pannier you can fit.

For the above reasons, it might be better to take the bike to a bike shop and see what will fit before you buy.

I've mended a small hole on mine where it was dragged along a brick building (slight misjudgement on my part)

Has anyone any experience of Carradice ones?

had mine over 25 years now ...^_^ and just last year had to repair a small hole in one due to rubbing against walls but it was not a problem as they sell the repair kit and was very easy  .. I also re-waterproofed them .. there good for a few more years yet
