I'm belatedly getting into Townes Van Zandt and i can't believe I've missed him all these years - I know some of the songs like Pancho and Lefty of course, but never registered how much incredible stuff he did. Which of the studio albums would you recommend?
Mort - I'd recommend 'Live at The Old Quarterhouse, Texas' it's a double with lots of great songs and it'll give you a good idea of what he's about - his between song patter can be surprisingly funny too.
The LP 'Flying Shoes' is my favourite and his last studio album for quite some years. After his death there were tons of best of and live CDs, but stick to any of the original LPs and you won't go far wrong.
There's a lot of gritty stuff to contend with but worth a listen.
You might be interested in the DVD 'Heartworn Highways' which has some good TVZ, and others, footage.
