A few years ago I was on a walking holiday with 3 friends doing the St Cuthbert's Way which ends on Holy Island. At about 10.30pm that night at low tide in the pitch dark we walked out to a little island just offshore on which stands a wooden cross. My friend sung The Old Rugged Cross while we stood still with the last dying rays of the sun in the background. I am not particularly religious but it is one of the best memories of my life. I was moved to tears.

Allegri's Miserere - it is simply one of the most moving choral pieces ever written.

Barber's Adagio for Strings - there is also a fantastic choral version of it by the choir of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor
- just tugs at the heart strings

Kiri te Kanawa's version of Hine e hine (much better than the Hayley Westenra version). This was played at my father's funeral.

And of course, the NZ National Anthem (or one of them).

That is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

Lots and lots of tunes. But the second movement of Ravel's piano concerto no 2 in G is very poignant for me. As is a song called 'All the trees of the field will clap their hands' by Sufjan Stevens. Both for very different reasons, but both make me cry lots. Both refer to times of great loss for me.

When my kids moved on from Junior school their final assembly was held in the church. Each child had written a short piece about their favourite teacher, and read it out. My twins' favourite teacher was a guitarist, and was in turn very fond of all of her class. They loved to sing Sufjan Steven's song at family assembly, and on that last Friday, with all the kids close to tears good old Mrs C stood up and played it and played it (it's nicely repetitive) and the kids sang it and sang it until they just couldn't do any more. I've got a lump in my throat just thinking about it.
