Which Shifters?

OK, so I broke one of my shifters (sora 9 speed triple) and I am now thinking of upgrading rather than replacing just one shifter. The bike has actually Sora 9 speed compact but the shifters are triple. In fairness I don't really like the thumb shifter thingy anyway. What can I upgrade to? I don,t mind buying used, but I don't know if 10 speed shifters are compatible etc. Any advice gretaly received.

10 speed shifter can (as I understand it) work with 9 speed cassettes and i have used something similar on my mtb in the past - I just learn to recognise when a double click was needed instead of a single click to change 1 gear, but I did find it frustrating. personally I would stick with 9 speed shifters for a 9 speed cassette and make life easier.
(can't advise which one, because I don't like those thumb thingies either but can't afford to change them until they break)

I had this problem with Sora 3400 (9 speed with thumb shift) where one shifter broke. I umm'd and ahh'd for a long time and went with Sora 3500 9 speed in the end which has the paddle shift, chiefly because I am planning to upgrade the entire bike soonish so didn't want to spend too much on it but I have already covered 3000 miles with them! Sora 3500 was very clunky at first but after 1500 miles it really settled down and is now pretty nice to use, but still not a patch on using Tiagra or 105 in terms of slickness.

Tiagra 9 speed (4500) from quite a few years ago will cost a lot of money, they are old and relatively sought after, i couldn't justify it. Tiagra/105 10 speed is another option, buy them from one of the German websites for £140 or see if Merlin/Ribble have a deal on, but then you obviously need to swap out the chain and cassette as part of the process.

Many thanks for this, very useful advice. I might try to find some used Tiagra on the bay, but failing that go for the 3500 Sora like you. I too am planning to upgrade my bike, but when depends on the wife:thumbsup:.
