I like the Islays. I've got a bottle of Glenmorangie downstairs and it's like drinking syrup, just too sweet and bland for me. It wees in its trousers if you put a bottle of Laphroaig quarter cask or Caol Ila next to it. Those two, plus Highland Park and Ardbeg are my favourites. Blends are good for sauces or toddies and it makes bugger all difference what they are to me; non-Scotch whiskies are not something I've ever felt the need to try, other than a curiosity - driven experiment with a bottle of Penderyn (which was ok, but a bit too Jack Daniels-y for my taste).

Like others the Malt would be anything phenolic. Talisker springs to mind but there are plenty of Islay whiskies I've still to try. I'm also determined to try this one http://www.abhainndearg.co.uk/

Irish, JD etc are all OK drinks in their own way but not really whisky.

And another vote for BNJ as a blend. Cutty Sark was another good one but rarely seen these days. What became of Haig (don't be vague!) or Black & White with the two dogs on the label?

not wanting to sound like a tart , but Penderyn is used in a Welsh version of Baileys. I don't like baileys but the Welsh Version ( Merlyn) is rather good.

Congrats on receiving what I'm sure will be a fun book to wade through looking for interesting drams to assess.

Am surprised there are plenty of CC'ers praising Islays. I find them too overpowering.

For an everyday, relatively easy-to-find single, Cragganmore is good.

For something a little off the wall and unbelievably good, try Amrut. It is Indian (!!) and will fool most people in thinking it is middle of the road Highland malt. Great value too!

Connoisseur's Choice bottlings used to be very reliable when I used to drink all this stuff - close to 20 yrs ago!

I hated whisky until I visited Islay in '91. I was successfully converted and Islay malts are still my favourite - the peatier and more medicinal the better! Laphroag and Lagavullen prob my top two.

Haven't tried the Kilchoman Kirstie - unlikely to now I'm teetotal.

In fact why am I contributing to this thread? I don't even drink the stuff!?

Laphroaig quarter cask, or possibly Lagavulin 16yr old.. Cant quite make up my mind which of these 2 is my favourite.

Tried a very, very nice shot of something Japanese over xmas, but cant for the life of me remeber what it was

Black Bottle for the blends.... but I'll pretty much drink anything except Bells.

Trouble is, I've just started 3 months teetotalness, so wont be sampling anything till April

I suppose I could. Can you rub some on your next post?

I will do when I get home from work - I don't keep supplies at my desk (although some days I wish I did!)

I quite like Laphroaig occasionally - but it's a bit too peaty for every day.

A) Talisker has been my favorite since long before I tried a FNRttC (note to self to remember hipflask for next one)
B) Black Bush
C) Used to be regular Grouse but the new Black Grouse is rather good...(especially when on special offer !)

Free-wheeling into oblivion...
1) Bruichladdich 'Rocks II' - 46%abv rocket fuel that slips down easy

2) Suntory 'Yamazaki' 12yo Japanese single malt - much better than the 10yo version

3) Bushmills 'Black Bush' - don't generally drink blands (typo intended) though

What a lovely thread to read through. You all got my taste buds going.

1. A 17 yr old sherry casked Bowmore I once drank!
2. Don't know? If its not scotch I tend not to touch it really.
3. 'Black Bottle' a blend of lots of Islay whiskies I also owned once!

Cheers. Or it will be when I get home.

Can't answer properly. The only one I like is Laphroag but I'll drink the other Islay whiskies. Love the peaty earthy taste.

Just bought a new bottle. Previous one was bought in 2004 - heavy spirits drinker me.

Now if you'd asked about red wine, or beers, 'twould be a different story.
