Great choices, but he did say nothing from Islay as too peaty for him....

Way back when, I used to run hotel bars, you could always tell when someone opened the Ardbeg as you could smell it the other end of the bar!

I've got some lovely Jura in the cupboard, ardbeg is lovely, balivenie 12 year double cask is good but Aberlour is my current favourite.

which Jura, there are 4 to chhoose from depending on how you like your single malt.

Superstition is lovely

I also like going to work in Aberdeen as I can get some decent single malt at the airport. my last lot was the warrior series . I always take a case in a case so I can get single malts I can't find down here.

I am also partial to any of the Penderyn welsh whiskies as they are stunningly smooth.

I can't stand the stuff, I've tried several times over the years to have a drop of whiskey in many manifestations, cheap, expensive, old and young. I can't cope with the smell of it to be honest before it even gets to my mouth, I can feel myself starting to gag as I bring the glass closer to my mouth. Occasionally I get given a bottle, and I just give it away.

It must be me.

Mmmm.. a very good point !

I am not a connoisseur by any stretch but I do like Highland Park or Bowmore. I do put a few drops of water in it which I find releases the flavour more. I've a bottle of something else in the cupboard which is rather nice but cannot remember what it is right now.. will have to root it out later.

Even a small measure of Glenfiddich invariably gives me a severe headache so I have learnt to avoid it.

Can't drink whisky - gives me horrendous headaches.

But brandy or cognac, no problems.

Another vote here for Highland Park, and I'm quite partial to an Ardmore.

If you want to try something a little more unusual yet still high quality, I recommend the Indian single malt called Amrut. Top notch stuff!

Lagavulin is the best Islay for me, but I like Talisker, Oban, Laphroaig. Ardbeg is just a touch too brine-like for my pallete. If not a peaty smoky one i'd try Dalwhinnie, a fine dram.

Isnt highland park the aldi brand? If it's decent I'll pick a bottle up but I wasn't happy with their dark rum which won a few awards.

Their London gin also won awards but I can't stand that paint stripper. The wife is partial though

No, Highland Park is its own self. You're thinking of Highland Earl I think. It's not meant to be too bad.

As for me, firm favourite is Highland park, pineapple, honey, hint of smoke. And yes, just a splash of water to release the flavour.


If you like the smoky flavour, Bruichladdich Peat is a belter. Not aged or anything, but so smoky it's like licking a burning log. Had a session on it once and next morning my pee smelt of smoke.
