You have no soul!

That observation may well be entirely correct, but I was blessed with an over-sized nose from birth, and I know what I'm talking about here. IMVVHO, peaty island malts are just a hugely expensive scam that North American golfers drone on about when they get home to Canadian Club and Coke.

Cat piss, nothing more, nothing less...

To avoid any spelling difficulties the Islay malts are commonly referred to as TCP.
Come to think of it, they taste of TCP too.

I think that can only really be said about Laphroaig. Not sure if this is true but apparently its medicinal/TCP like smell was why it was so popular in America during the prohibition as it was one of the few whiskies still imported for prescription as a medicinal alchohol. I guess they thought that anything that smelled and tasted like that had to be medicine.

I don't care, I'm still a fan of Laphroaig and if I had to have only one bottle in the house that would probably be it (though the cast strength stuff is evil in a bottle). Bunnahabhain, Talisker, Jura, Bruichladdich, and Old Pulteney are also favourites.

And I might be ridiculed for this, but, as blends go Jamiesons isn't too bad at all, certainly miles better than Bells or Grouse and the only blend I've tasted that's worth drinking on its own.

Lagavulin. Never had a whole measure myself, but there is more joy to be had by sniffing someone else's glass of this nectar of the gods than there is in having a dram of something more regular.

Oh, and I'll have mine watered down, 50/50. Neat is just for showing off, when you just feel the alcohol burn and loose most of the taste.

Brilliant! You put your finger on the button. They also have a lingering finish of cats' piss. Quite ghastly.

Whislt you are perfectly entitled to your opinions, you're still wrong
You probably like Bells /*cough, spit */, or even Jack Daniels (burnt sugar nastyness)

Laphroaig 1/4 cask for me please.

Other fine malts are available.

if you bought a bottle of Tesco Value or Lidl cheap stuff and it tasted like them you would take it back as faulty. See also expensive but bitter chocolate, costly but sour coffee and exclusive but weak tea.

I have to agree that the TCP malts are a bandwagon that I jumped off when I achieved the age of reason.
In terms of wine, to me, liking them is on a par with the people who still drink heavily-oaked Australian Chardonnays like Jacob's Creek and tannin soaked New World ribena reds.

I'm currently working my way through a rather pleasant Irish whiskey, Dun Leire.

But each to his own of course!

I went to Bakewel show this year and luckily found a whisky taster tent - so glad I did !

I bought a bottle of Carn Mor 12 yr old Islay single malt - absolutely the best whisky I have ever tasted !

add just a single drop of water and watch the liquids mix, the drop of water really releases the smokiness and allows the flavour to caress your tongue ! ^_^

Before I discovered this my favourite tipple would have been Highland Park.

Have to agree... I really don't get on with Islay whisky. I have even been known to throw a bottle away  after a single dram.

A nice Highland Single Malt hits the spot every time, although the Japanese make a good whisky too.
