As far as I understand the white poppy is a symbol of peace and has nothing to do with remembrance .
I thought a white poppy was a symbol of remembrance for those who were shot dead by their own countrymen for being conscientious objectors?

There seems to be some confusion about what a white poppy means or why people wear it.
Not really surprising as the message is fairly supressed by those who are happy for wars to continue.

I thought Ffoeg was joking about purple poppies but here they are:

Surely if you wear one of these hardly anyone will know what it's for?

Also agree with the observation about red poppies being sold far too early - it looks grasping to me. Reminds me of walking into the supermarket recently and seeing a shelf of pumpkins and witch masks next to a shelf of Christmas decorations and chocolate reindeer.

My wife told me about purple poppies this evening when I came in from work - a few people spoke to me today about me wearing a white poppy and seemed genuinely interested, and some of them said they would do likewise next year.

.. and they died to preserve the way of life that enables lefto pinkies to wear a white poppy. There's either irony or hypocrisy there.

The assumption being that ex-forces do not wear a white poppy?
Would you care to guess if I have been a member of the armed forces at any point?
Or am I to assume that you have already decided?

No - but mainly because I don't see them sold.
I started a thread in CA&D about it (maybe should have started it here, people will be nicer!)

Sorry I can't see that as I've not been a member long enough. Hope I have not posted the same in the wrong place.
