Whilst I agree with CP, (except about Come Dine With Me, which is actually about laughing at stupid self important people) I just reach for the off button, there is actually a real world out there and that's where I prefer to live.

I was going say that if I had my way I would get rid of the TV but then I have two reasons not to 1. Its the only time the wifes quiet and 2. I would miss the cycling on Eurosport.

there is some drivel on. i tend not to watch it though. theres always something worth watching on cable. how its made ,massive engines, extreme engineering , you get my drift .

at the moment my fave is the current Nigella series. she has something about her ;)

CP, a friend told me about a BBC4 series about German art that's on at the minute. That might come in handy/or not next time you're there.

Not rich enough to have Sky, so 'stuck' with freeview. It just seems that the main channel peak time programs are total dross, yet the media, radio, breakfast telly, papers and people at work/faceberk all seem to rave about some dancing program or singing show?

None of them seem to yearn for travel, culture, adventure and excitement?

Our local telly news tonight was filled with stuff about the X factor winner who is from Essex. I had to go and feed the cat as a more entertaining alternative! And that was the BBC version so god only knows what the Anglia flavour thing was like. I didn't see it but it must have been wall to wall X factor llobocks (if you'll pardon my Welsh).

I'm more of a radio man myself and would be happy to pay licence fee for radio alone. In some parts of the world, radio (and tv for that matter) really is truly awful. Some of the gems on R4 or World Service are outstanding. Any good stuff on telly's a bonus for me.

Sadly, the most appropriate programme for many on this topic is not currently showing. ;) I'm sure that Geoffrey Palmer would send his regards to his most committed fans.
I'm a fan of his TV series The Compleat Angler, which is a serialisation of the eponymous book by 17th-century author Izaac Walton.

Not everyone's cuppa, but I like it.

It is good, although I find myself disagreeing with just about everything on it (no mention of Fichte? no mention of the isolation of the German middle class, or of censorship?). Andrew Graham-Dixon is one of a slew of really good art historians who get on to the telly Waldemar Januszak (sp?) and Matthew Collinge are especially good. And who can forget Robert Hughes' 'Shock of the New'?

Oh - and, while we're on German romanticism, there's this from the Beeb

Bring back the vanishing dot!

Oh yes! Bring back the test-card and the National Anthem as well, together with news-readers who speak proper English and report news rather than go into the ghastly Orla ("I'm a professional gloomy") Guerin mode. BTW, has she ever been seen to smile?

Mutter, mutter....

I don't watch much TV any more, I just tune in for the programmes that I like (QI!). I'm actually thankful that most TV is drivel, it frees up my time to do other things.

The only programmes that I make a point of watching on terrestrial TV are Scrubs, Big Bang Theory, Top Gear, QI.

On satellite, it's usually the footie/cycling and that's about it.

I bought my first ever telly a few years ago, when I got into F1 again. Until that point, I'd been going to friends' houses or pubs to watch the races, and I thought "this is ridiculous, buy a TV set". Since then, I've watched the F1 and the occasional Moto GP race, and nothing else. I've never been one for the telly, even when I was a kid.
