Anyone join the LCC? I think I will, as obviously they need the members.........

I've been an LCC member for nearly 13 years. Got tired of the CTC after 7 years membership. I left as their membership renewals went pants down leaving me without insurance cover on two consecutive years. They didn't and still don't seem to acknowledge there is a problem depsite their being a fair few hacked off members commenting on the CTC forum. It really was an uphill task dealing with CTC to try to get the problems I experienced with membership sorted out even after the second time. They also messed up the membership of a friend who I enrolled as a gift to him and his family. I shan't ever join the CTC again. They did try to merge with the LCC a few years ago but fortunately the LCC members saw sense and rejected the proposed merger.

The LCC is cheaper to join as well. Has 3rd party insurance cover and also affiliated cycling solicitors. It's magazine was excellent, now only ok, but it is still a reasonable read and worth joining. It has a strong local borough network of cyclists. It also gets you 10% discount on most stuff in cycling shops in and around London. The guys at LCC are easy to get hold of, friendly and crucially don't have costly 0870/0871/0844 numbers to contact them. They have direct dial geograhic numbers.

HTH.

Never even heard of the LCC, just shows you what you can learn on here. That's pretty good people have the choice then.

I get it (and theft etc for the bike) on the household insurance. Must unlapse my CTC membership sometime though.

What I don't have is road risks for the bikes. (ie repair/ replacement if they get damaged and I can't recover from a 3rd party) Anyone else get that with their insurer?

Nope it's called comprehensive insurance and tbh I'm not sure it would be economically viable. I don't have it. Anyway given that any damage is likely to be the result of being in collision with a vehicle and all vehicles have to have insurance it is not a major concern IMHO. Mind you there are allegedly 2.5 million uninsured drivers on the roads which is only set to rise in the current recession. Also it depends what damage is done to one's bike. If superficial then the average motorist would probably pay up to avoid hassle of getting their insurer involved. If serious damage then you are likley to be injured as well or dead .

Yes - just wondered if anyone got it included.

I've only needed the 3rd party and legal assistance insurance cover twice, in 40 years of cycling, but its good to have when its needed. I've also claimed for 2 nicked bikes. They paid, but not enough for like for like replacements.

On the few occasions I've had my bike damaged all but one have been my fault or bad road maintenance with wheels broken.

Once ran into the back of a car and broke its plastic bumper and the house insurance paid the £450 repair - glad I had that! Once claimed against a car driver for new forks and front wheel - same collision but he reversed into me at traffic lights, with a traffic warden watching. Glad I had the legal assistance part of the house insurance for that one.
