Hi all, have been a very good boy this year and have been commuting to work 5 days a week,10 miles each way and loving it,the only problem i'm having is the state of the cycle path i use,it runs along the side of the A127 from southend to basildon and onwards,it's a real mess with broken glass, debris from roadworks and tears in the tarmac all resulting in at least 3 punc****s a week,my question is,who is responsible for the upkeep of these paths as i want to have a moan,it's getting to the point of me thinking about giving up and getting back in the van  ,if it's the council, the path travels through about 3 different council areas just on my journey, help!

Guess you'll have to contact all three councils

Hopefully doing so shouldn't turn into a too Kafka-esque nightmare!

Regardless of who is responsible, complaining won't make any difference. Nothing will be done. You may call me an old cynic you may...

Well, I can tell you certainly by not complaining then nothing will happen. At least by complaining there is at least a chance. What harm five minutes of your time to give it a try?

Quite right. There are cycle paths in Gosport that are often occupied by youths in the evenings, especially in the summer, and broken beer bottles are a regular feature. I've e-mailed the town council a few times about this and they do actually send out a sweeper truck.

Essex County Council should have an online 'highway fault' reporting page, with a pavement and cycle path section

It is important to emphasise the 'dangerous' condition

Bristol City Council have a telephone line that you can report broken glass, and I've even seen a sweeper on the Bristol to Bath cycle path. But I do think they need prompting every now and again.

I have to say that I have never, in all my years of cycling seen anyone clean a cycle path. We complained to the Council a couple of years ago and they said it was done regularly - they were lying.

Yep when you complain go along the dangerous/safety route. point out the path is dangerous and riding on the road is dangerous, which you have no choice to do and this could of course result in legal action against the council for forcing you on to an unsuitable road. should make them shift their ass.

Thanks guys,i have located the report a fault section in the essex county council website and have left a report on how dangerous the path is,falling on broken glass, alternatively riding in road, that sort of thing, also contacted 'cycle southend' from our local council so here's hoping, not going to give up commuting just yet, there is an alterative road, the A13 but this has roadworks on too resulting in a very rough/dangerous ride, think they are trying to tart the area up for the olympics due to the mountainbiking being held in hadleigh, wish they would get a move on  ,let you know what happens if anything!

For issues in North Bristol, I've contacted StreetCare from South Glos. I think sites like fixmystreet provide a front end to departments like these.
As Summerdays says, they occasionally need the odd prompt, but I've found them to be pretty good overall with most issues cleared up within a few days.
