A very good piece... I enjoyed watching it.

The BBC being the BBC obviously need to bring in a counter argument for balance, and by stretching to the biggest nobber they could find, managed to add even more strength to pro cycling argument.

It's a classic BBC thing that they feel they need to show "balance". In a political debate, this is fair enough, but it means that in a discussion about, say, science, they wheel on a nut job creationist to balance the rational, scientific view.

The "Alliance of British Drivers" appears to be the equivalent of this... a tiny pressure group with little evidence that they are representative of anybody. I wonder if the beeb tried to get one of the mainstream motoring organisations on board but couldn't, or felt that a nut job would make better TV?

Even if you ignore the ridiculous opinion re cyclists vs motorists - public transport is not well enough developed in UK and if we all got into our cars in Cambridge it would be total and complete gridlock - maybe we should try it one day and see if even the emergency services can get through - the only consolation is that he does sound really really stupid which does tend to alienate even the mild cycle haters!

FYI I was almost taken out by a motorist while I was on foot and half way across a zebra crossing a few weeks ago - my WTF shrug was met by a finger as he sped by without even slowing - I guess I found the only badly behaved motorist in the country

... talking of "nut job creationists", I see that Sammy Wilson, MP for East Antrim, is also a patron of the Alliance of British Drivers.

If you haven't heard of Mr Wilson, he is a "young earth creationist" who has objected to things like evolution being mentioned in museums, and geological explanations for the formation of the Giants Causeway.

For too long the government and local authorities have got away with a 'divide and conquer' strategy. They divide road users into pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, motorists, motorcyclists, truckers and public transport users as if we only ever use one form of transport. They then play one group against the other to prevent us from realising how much we all have in common.
