I've not quite got my full deepest winter clothing strategy sorted yet but that sounds nice and toasty warm and you shouldn't get too wet on the inside from sweat with the base layer doing its job. With the tights, I bought 190g weight which have been ok so far at minimum 7degC in the last few days but I don't think they will be good enough when it gets around 0deg.

okay that's good to know, i have been riding in shorts even at 8 degrees, don't mind that after the first 10 minutes i am already toasty, waiting to check the weather app to see it drop close to 0 then it's tights ahoy

One thing I've found out over the last few months which has prevented getting full 10/10 happiness is now I'm a lot fitter than I used to be, it takes what seems like absolutely ages (15mins or so) to get properly warmed up, so I either have to put up with shivering the first 5 mins or sweating buckets and having to stop (which I greatly dislike) to remove layers after half an hour.

as long as what it wicks away from your skin has somewhere to evaporate to properly - a breathable outerlayer is also required otherwise all you do is move the moisture from skin to layer next to non breathable outer. Its why a lot of divers think their drysuit leaks when it is the sweat that has been wicked from the skin being deposited on the inside of the drysuit.

Love winter. Favourite part of the year. Given I appear to have the temperature regulation abilities of a bulldog I spend all summer, spring and most of autumn being too hot. And that especially applies on my cycle to work. As has been said ice isn't too much of an issue in central London. Didn't miss a day last winter and kept my 23c slicks on the whole time!

I wouldn't say I was looking forward to it, as I much prefer riding in warm conditions, but I'll still commute. Only missed 2-3 days last winter, due to very icy conditions.

The best thing about winter is the macho willy-waving on here! "Yeah, well I did my 25 mile e/w commute to Antarctica on 23mm slicks and didn't wear gloves....etc"

Ditto, except I'm in Peterborough although I think I was forced of for one day by the weather, not because it was bad (media reports its was armageddon) but because I couldnt face the driving chaos created by less than a cm of snow.

I am currently pondering the idea of commuting in the winter. As I have only been cycling a few months this would be my first time and the thought is quite scary sometimes.... I don't care about the cold/bad weather, it's the dark and ice that worries me.

Don't mind the rain and I hate the wind. Luckily I can walk to and from the train when it's icy/snowing. It's just boring compared to cycling and takes that much longer...

Hardly willy waving. I live inside zone 2 in the middle of London. I was commenting on how well the roads are gritted. As I said ice isn't an issue. Also quote me properly rather than alluding to my post if you're having a pop at me sunshine.
