I reckon my favourite thing about winter commuting is that when it keeps getting hotter in summer you run out of options to keep cool. In winter you can always wear more/warmer clothes to stay comfy as the mercury drops.

Hardly willy waving. I live inside zone 2 in the middle of London. I was commenting on how well the roads are gritted. As I said ice isn't an issue. Also quote me properly rather than alluding to my post if you're having a pop at me sunshine.

It was a good natured joke about the sort of comments we get on here during bad weather.

In fairness, I can see how you took it personally after your comment about 23c tyres, but I hadn't even read your post before I pressed send on my reply.

Fair enough. I did take it to be aimed directly at me but if you say it wasn't then that's fine and I'll say no more about it

Its horrid but at the same time refreshing and character building. That said my memory of last winter was commuting with a heavy cold man flu with a headwind which turned into a blizzard... :cold:

I am currently pondering the idea of commuting in the winter. As I have only been cycling a few months this would be my first time and the thought is quite scary sometimes.... I don't care about the cold/bad weather, it's the dark and ice that worries me.

When you are wrapped up like a Christmas turkey, your hands and feet are beyond feeling and your manhood or ladyhood are long since given up the ghost and then it starts to rain, that freezing cold rain in your face... I can't wait either

My commuter now is something I can control a bit easier, so hopefully wont come off this winter.

I do have all the right kit and wrap up warm in winter. The cold isnt really the problem, its when you loose feeling to your fingers and toes that annoys me most.

It'll be just another winter, I've ridden more of them than I care to remember.
The geared bike will be put away when the clocks change, the fixed will get checked over and any problems sorted then be the only bike I ride till the spring, as the temperature drops the winter clothes and gloves will start being used, the same routine I've followed for years.

The best thing about winter is the macho willy-waving on here! "Yeah, well I did my 25 mile e/w commute to Antarctica on 23mm slicks and didn't wear gloves....etc"

If it wasn't for that I'd get the farking bus. It's the one thing that makes it worthwhile.

I leave the spiked tyres in the shed just so I can fall off and get some war stories.
