There are obviously quite a few keen readers hereabouts, so I thought this might make an interesting thread.

My own personal choice is a no-brainer: a guy called Robertson Davies. ( Everyone say: 'wha?') He writes big, earthy, richly flavoured page-turners that you just can't help but love every word of the way - and come back to read again...and again. What's Bred In The Bone. Wonderful!

B. Traven. A man so careful to conceal his identity, there is no real consensus on who he really was or what his real name was. A truly brilliant writer who's Mexican novels, including 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' are outstandingly good.

John Hopkins - although to be fair I've gone on about 'The Attempt' so many times that at least 2 CCers have read it.

Simon Raven - his roman fleuve, Alms for Oblivion, is worth a read and "Shadows on the Grass" is the filthiest book written about cricket.

Tom Kakonis - US crime writer, 4 books as far as I know - Michigan Roll, Criss Cross, Double Down and Counter Culture.
I would say Miles Gibson as he never seems to get a mench anywhere but he's so flipping good people must've heard of him..

Paul Auster's Mr Vertigo. Wonderful storytelling.
