not sure this is the right area for this , but could anybody please tell me why do the 2 scruffiest bikes in my collection give such a great riding experiance ?

amongst the others are ones that are equally nice to ride and loads better to look at but i just more of a buzz on the scruffy ones .

anybody else feel the same ?

Because the scruffy ones are good enough to get ridden constantly to get in that condition?

You are not scared to damage the scruffy bike I guess? With a £1000 bike, I would be always worrying
Or with a £1k bike you could let it get scruffy and not worry......
This is my £799 bike with several XT upgrades

It's been in this condition for a few years now

Cos with the scruffy one I can leave it at the train station locked with two of the most crappiest locks I own and its still there after a long day at work, its even still been there at half twelve at night, leave my Giant or Cube and they'd be gone in a flash!.
So scruffy is good!.
A scruffy carrier bag tied to the seat helps complete the look when left locked, just avoid the Harrods ones.

I've got a made to measure Colnago Master X-lite in the garage which down to the hand built wheels probably stands me to the tune on £4k, can't remember the last time I rode it. My Kenisis Cross-lite on the other hand is my go-to bike and I even take this out on longer read rides with not a drop of mud in sight, guess we all have out "go to bikes" and there not necessarily our best ones!

For years I rode bikes that were either brought from adverts or built out of spare parts, they were always kept in top mechanical condition and there were some of the best riding bikes I've ever owned amongst them, as others have said you can leave them anywhere and if you drop them it doesn't matter, you've just added to the chips and scratches already on the paint work.

No idea, but my 'free from a mate' ratty old Raliegh is sat in the car ready to go ride at the Freecycle today and did sterling service commuting in to Amsterdam for the long weekend we were out there. Down tube shifters and brakes you have to pray to FTW.

My bikes never stay scruffy for more than about 5 days, because they get cleaned every weekend. My commuting bike has some well-earned nicks and scratches, but is never scruffy.
