In answer to the OP there are a million reason to drive rather than cycle, I think it's rather shortsighted to think otherwise.

Motorists aren't idiot nor are cyclists, some people are idiot no matter what mode of transport they use.

What happened to my 'S' key last night?

Never said they were idiots. I'm saying the situation is a perpetuated idiocy. According to local accounts the majority of them arent going that far and that there is even much to be gained from car-sharing... for some reason locals resist change that would bring them benefit

I dont know if this thread is still on the lines of the title but I'm just reflecting on today I had to collect the car from the garage solid queues on the way back on a beautiful crisp clear day. Why do folk put their self through that everyday (and it was only the lunchtime peak )

Edit: Spelling

We've had 3 weeks of gridlock in parts of Southampton. There have been days when the drivers have looked over at me wistfully. I've seen it and recognised it, rare though it is.

I've not been the shortest way to work but every morning (school term) there's a queue of a mile or more; I cruise by in the middle hatched area :bicycle: I must that became a bit boring after a few months (every day the same) but on the odd occasion when I'm late its the exact same ;)

I car share with my OH when I don't ride to work, though getting other people to join us at the times we're wanting to commute to work is impossible. At least today we maxed out the number of people in the car... 2 seats & 2 people  never mind the fuel economy is circa 28mpg :secret:

In Los Angeles (USA), Traffic is a BLOODY nightmare both day and night. p
Prior to cycling to work, I always stresssed and cursed while rushing to work. It was just horrible! Now, because I'm cycling, I'm soooooo much relaxed while sight seeing all the beautiful sights from the river bed. Best part however, is blazing by all the bumper to bumper traffic in the busy streets. I just know them drivers wish they were me

I think they put themselves through it for a whole lot of reasons:

They don't own a bike
They have kids to take to school
They can't get a weeks shopping on a bike
It's warmer and dryer in a car
They use the cars during working hours
They don't have to change when they are work
They have read the recent cycling stats and think it is too dangerous

There are lots of reasons.

they aren't plonkers like me who went out with out over shoes yesterday and got my toes wet and frozen!
Cheers Ed

:bicycle:Steve, I have kids to pick up after work, I have many reslonsibilities that involve my car; however, I CHOOSE to leave the madness of my car commute at home while I enjoy cycling as a stress reliever. Nonetheless, I understand some folks just have a too many tasks to keep up with cycling. People can still cycle on weekends and even an evening ride would work. I LOVE riding my bike in! Would'nt have it any other way

Me too Synapse. But sometimes the 12 mile ride to work at 4.30am is too much to face. In fact I use my honda 125 through the winter months, sometimes the car. But in the summer I have an idyllic ride to work, with many routes to choose from. I am at work for 6am but still make time to ride to work and stop for a swim in the sea on the way. On the way home it is back to the beach for a swim before going home. It is like being on holiday every day.

We don't have children so it is not a problem for us. I think when you do have children the car can be a much easier option.
