Why do motorists put themselves through this?

Southampton is a small city. Relatively flat, relatively temperate. Yet recently in the local paper there have been a raft of complaints about cyclists, about traffic jams, with motorists who give testimony over the "chaos" of recent road works, and parking costs. Reading the articles its clear many of the drivers are only going a couple of miles.

I must have sailed past something like 3 miles of standing traffic today. As did the many motorcyclists I saw.

Not very, that's how many.

It is true (and many of the older members here will know I've said this before) that motoring advertising is a presentation of dystopia. And when faced with the reality it angers them.

It's a funny way of putting it for me. I tend to see road reality as being the dystopic bit.

Took me just over 45 mins to drive across the itchen bridge today. Traffic was crazy. Said to my colleague in the van with me "this makes me wish I was on my bike"

Of course, it didn't bother me as I was getting paid to sit in the queues. But the motorists Sat next to me didn't look that impressed.

Will only get worse with the planned works on that bridge.

How many times do you see cyclists sail past queuing cars in car adverts?

Not very, that's how many.

That should be how they advertise motorbikes. Sick of waiting in traffic with the rest of the losers. Well say no more. Filter past the lot while making the self-gratification artist sign to show that a motorbike is better than a car :P

This happens every single day in London. It's not a strange sight for us Londoners.

Driving and owning a car is seen as normal and so (to some extent) is sitting in a traffic jam, despite what people might say.

The anger\frustration comes because, as a motorist, there is nothing you can do about it (traffic jam) and so are powerless.

As someone once said to me, learrn to control that which you have power of, ignore that which you can't.

Imo, the more of an inbalance in our lives towards those things that you can't control, the more depressing life is.

I tend to stay away from driving these days.

I've noticed this past week cycling in Southampton that motorists are getting more impatient with cyclists (possibly just me). I've had several cars beeping me and trying to block me off as I filter past them in traffic jams. It does confuse me, but then I don't drive yet so not entirely sure why they have a problem, motorcyclists I find are the best. They often give way to me in traffic jams as they know I can filter through heavier traffic easier than them.

I've had several cars beeping me and trying to block me off as I filter past them in traffic jams..

I've found that on the increase recently. Some drivers make an effort to let you pass by moving over to the left, occasionally others deliberately move out to block the gap.
